Highway 64/40 Closure

The Post-Dispatch is filled with stories and commentary about the upcoming highway 64/40 construction project. Most of the coverage is about the concerns for massive disruptions. But there is another view. This disruption should be a great opportunity for St. Louis to rediscover mass transit and non-motorized transportation. There are express buses every half hour from the Ballas Transfer Center to the nearest metrolink station -- and these buses are very underutilized. Metro has a nice article about how we have the mass transit capacity to handle this 'crises'. http://www.metrostlouis.or

A New Group Forming: AutoFreeSTL

Here is a message from some dedicated pedestrian advocates:

An amazing and outrageous notion ! but wouldn't it be great if cars were reduced by only 50%....

AutoFreeSTL is a free on-line Yahoo group for the sharing of information about public transit in St Louis. As you all know, Metro may work for you if you understand the system (but that takes a lot of effort) and users of transit are usually considered second-class citizens. We need each other, and St Louis needs us! This group was founded by Cheryl Hammond, a member of Sierra Club and Citizens for Modern Transit.

You can access the group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AutoFreeSTL/
