About the Walking School Bus Organizing Tool

This online organizing tool is a partnership between Walkable St. Louis and Trailnet. It is intended to help people connect with others who would like join or volunteer for a walking school bus.

What is a walking school bus?

A walking school bus is a group of children walking to school with one or more adults. If that sounds simple, it is, and that's part of the beauty of the walking school bus. It can be as informal as two families taking turns walking their children to school to as structured as a route with meeting points, a timetable and a regularly rotated schedule of trained volunteers.

The purpose of this website is to help you organize walking school buses in your own neighborhood. With it you can

  • find a school in your area;
  • see what walking school buses are being organized (if any);
  • let others know that you are interested in joining a walking school bus;
  • and even create a new walking school bus for others to join.

A Note About Safety: How you manage your walking school bus is your own responsibility. This tool will simply allow you to email route volunteers and/or those interested in joining a route. Be sure to verify the identities of all volunteers by calling them and meeting them in a public place to work out the details of managing the walking school bus. It is very important that you feel comfortable with any adult volunteers before allowing them to walk your children to school.
